Uglies

I’ve drawn hundreds, perhaps even thousands of these at this point. At first it was a guilty secret, hidden away in my archives and scattered across journal entries, event programs, and post-it notes. Now it’s become one of my favorite ongoing projects ever. I’ve completed a few custom commissions, sold & sent dozens of prints in the mail, and will probably keep adding to this till I’m dead. Contact me for customs or prints.

The whole point is to laugh, to break up anything feeling rigid, and to let whatever feels like relief come flowing through. The whole point is to let go, relax, and fart it all out.

The goal is NOT to define what is ugly, that’s way beyond my wheelhouse, but to explore and express the whole without shame. My inner critic is quite articulate, and it’s been important to me to move through this project reclaiming my right to express the whole of myself — “ugliness” included. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter who finds it “ugly” or not, the outcome isn’t the point, it’s the loving, witnessing, embracing, and humorous energy that I practice in the process.

I’ve titled this ongoing project “Uglies,” not because I care what is or isn’t ugly. What I do care about is that I practice not being so afraid of that word or any other criticism being used against me that I let it stop me from creating or sharing. I guess I’m claiming the word for myself.
